Nursing Business Opportunity: Life Care Planning (LCP)
Consider Life Care Planning (LCP) as a nursing business and career option. According to the Florida Institute for Neurologic Rehabilitation, Inc., glossary of terms [finr.com/glossary.html], a life care plan is a document. . . that establishes the goals and objectives for rehabilitation and discusses current and projected future requirements of care needed for the patient to achieve a quality existence. It summarizes the medical, psychosocial, educational, vocational, and daily living needs of the patient. The plan also outlines a cost assessment of care and equipment needed for the patient over his or her lifetime. Life care planners work for law firms, insurance companies, HMOs, governmental agencies and as entrepreneurs in independent practice. They work for people who have catastrophic injuries such as spinal cord injuries, brain injuries, burns, and amputations. Life care planners may also work with people with chronic health conditions such as chronic pain and immune disorders. Helpful Background: To be a successful life care planner it is very helpful to be a health care professional such as a nurse, physical therapist, or occupational therapist. It is also helpful to have a background in an area that relates to life care planning such as spinal cord injury or brain injury rehabilitation, pediatrics or home health care. Start-Up Costs: Start-up costs are low. During a teleforum with Susan Riddick-Grisham, the founder of the Care Planner Network, Susan stated that a health care professional can start a life care planning business for a couple of thousand dollars in addition to the cost of training. Earnings Potential: Life care planners in independent practice usually charge by the hour. Hourly rates range from about $80 - $400 per hour. Rates charged for testifying would typically be higher.
