How to be successful in 2008
LeaRae Keyes, RN

Just as many people make resolutions for their personal life you need to make resolutions for your business. Resolutions for your business are business goals. These goals will help keep you on track. They give you a target so you have something to aim for.

Your goals need to be specific in terms of what you want to accomplish, when you will accomplish them and how you will accomplish them. Work on your business goals in that order. What do you want to accomplish in 2008? When during the year? What steps will you take?

An example of a business goal would be "I will earn $10,000 per month in my nurse entrepreneur business by June 1, 2008." I will do this by developing a marketing plan. My marketing plan will include online and offline marketing.

You will also need to determine how much time and money you will dedicate to marketing. Plan to spend 75% of your time in your first year on marketing. By knowing how much you plan to spend on marketing you will better be able to determine if a particular marketing opportunity will fit with your overall plan.

Action plan:

  • Write your business goals at the beginning of the calendar year (which is likely also the beginning of your business fiscal year).
  • Put the action steps on your calendar so you plan in time to do the things you need to do to grow your business.
