10 tips for nurses in business
LeaRae Keyes, RN
Here are 10 tips for nurses in business.
- Plan - Spend part of your time planning so that you use your time more
effectively. You only have so many hours in each day so planning how you can
best use your time will help you get results more quickly.
- Market all the time - If you only market when you do not have work to do you
will have an income sheet with huge peaks and valleys. You need to set time
aside to market even when you are very busy. This will help bring in business
that you can work on when your current work is completed.
- Collect money promptly - Begin working on collecting on past due invoices in
about 30 days after you have sent out the invoices. The longer an overdue
invoice goes once it becomes past due the less likely you will ever collect the
money that is due.
- Be prompt, never miss a deadline - You want to establish a reputation of
delivering on time. If you start to deliver work after the date it was due you
will find that your work will quickly drop off.
- Give value - Over deliver whenever possible. Surprise people with what you
have to offer and you will have lifelong customers.
- Listen - It is very important to hone your listening skills. When you are
able to really listen to a customer you will learn what his needs are and be
able to match your product or service to the customers need(s).
- Do not talk negatively about your competitors - Even though you may be
tempted to say something negative about your competitors, don't do it. Sell your
business on your strengths not your competitor's weaknesses. Think about
negative political campaigning; it really isn't all that convincing, is it?
- Stay current, set aside time and money to attend conferences - Your budget
should include an allotment for education to keep yourself current. You should
also allocate time for this purpose. It is particularly important when you are
in a solo business to stay current as there is no one higher up the ladder to
keep you informed on the trends and developments in your area of business.
- Strive to be the best at what you do - Do the best you know how to do to and
you will impress your customers and possibly even yourself.
- Take care of yourself- Be sure to take care of yourself so you are strong
enough and healthy enough to take care of your business.
