Do you think like an employee or like an entrepreneur?
LeaRae Keyes, RN

Even if you start a business and are self employed you are not necessarily an entrepreneur. There are many people who are self employed who think and act like employees. In this tip I will comment on a few ways that entrepreneur's think differently from employees.

Creating something from nothing is the hallmark of being an entrepreneur. Entrepreneurs go out and create something new. They do not follow a step by step plan created by someone else to invent a business. Entrepreneurs cannot hold themselves back from building a business around their original idea.

I am often asked questions such as "How do I get contracts with hospital for the staffing agency I have created?" This is not a question that a true entrepreneur would be asking. A real entrepreneur would have multiple ideas about how to get contracts before even starting a business. An entrepreneur would lay awake at night with so many ideas on how to get contracts that they would have a difficult time calming down and falling asleep because they want to leap out of bed and implement those ideas! Can someone who doesn't think like an entrepreneur start a business? Yes, but it will be more of a struggle than for the entrepreneurial thinker.

Entrepreneurs take responsibility for their success and failure. They do not look for other people to blame for their mistakes and failures. They accept the responsibility and look for the lessons to be gained. Entrepreneurial thinkers do not make excuses, they take responsibility. Entrepreneurs do not look to place blame. Rather they look to solve problems and prevent them from reoccurring.

Long term thinking is also a critical factor in entrepreneurial thinking. While employees may often think short term, entrepreneurs think long term and are willing to wait patiently to reap the benefits of what they have created. Entrepreneurs must be able to think and plans years into the future. Actions are often needed years in advance to lay the ground for future growth. It is therefore important for entrepreneur to think long term.

If you want to be an entrepreneur, be sure you have the characteristics and traits of an entrepreneur. If you do not have entrepreneurial characteristics and traits, build these skills and abilities before venturing into your own business to help guarantee your success.
