Five myths about being an entrepreneur
LeaRae Keyes, RN
Do you know what to expect as an entrepreneur? Here are five myths to consider:
- Most entrepreneurs start their business on other people's money. Actually, most entrepreneurs start their business with their own money. If they do not have enough money in reserve to start their business they take out personal loans to get their business up and running.
- If you build it they will come. To have a successful business you must have a unique solution to a customer's problem. Then you have to make sure they know about it. Your customers won't find you if you don't spread the word about your business far and wide. As you spread your message you must be sure your customer knows exactly what value they will receive by using your product or service.
- Sales is about telling them what you do. Sales is more about listening and uncovering needs than it is about telling. Your customer does not want to hear what you have to offer. They want to know how you will solve a problem they have and how they will benefit from this.
- You will be profitable within 3 - 6 months. A small business may not even make money in the first year let alone make a profit. Be prepared to support both yourself and your business until it is able to support you.
- You will have more time to do what you want. You will not typically work fewer hours as a nurse entrepreneur. You will likely work more hours as the owner of your business than you worked as an employees. You will have more flexibility in your schedule, but you will not work fewer hours.
