It may seem counter intuitive to start a business during a recession. However, there are a number of reasons why this could be a great time for you to launch your nurse entrepreneur start up business.

Many hospitals in my part of the country, the Midwest, are laying off nurses. If this has happened to you or is about to happen to you start planning now! How will you get through these tough times? You may find it depressing to look for a job when there are very few job openings. It may be far more encouraging and energizing for you to use this time to start planning for your nurse entrepreneur endeavor.

7 reasons why a recession is a good time to start your nursing related business:

1. Companies are more likely to be looking for lower cost alternatives to their current providers.
2. Business supplies are often discounted so it doesn't cost as much to start a business.
3. Companies do more outsourcing to decrease their bottom line which will benefit you if you can fill the gap.
4. The marketplace is less crowded and this means less competition. It is like taking a vacation during the off season.
5. Money is not lost in a recession. Wealth is transferred. Follow the money. Sell to those that have the money. 
6. People spend more time at home. Grab their attention by using 2.0 technologies.
7. People working longer hours to hang onto their jobs are willing to pay for services because they have less leisure time.

A recession is a great time to start a business that you can finance yourself and doesn't require much start-up capital. When you have limited capital it forces you to be creative and to watch expenses, cash flow, and budgets very closely. These are important activities to learn and use throughout the life of your business.

If you business idea is not for a business that will thrive in a recession, use this time to develop your plan so you will be ready to get a jump start on other business that will be launched when we come out of this recession. If your business idea will thrive in a recession you need to also determine if it can succeed in an economic boom. You don't want to put all the time and effort into building a business that will fail as soon as the recession passes. 

Microsoft, Hewlett-Packard, and Disney all started during recessions/depressions. You can succeed in starting a nurse entrepreneur business during a recession but you must plan carefully.
