Where to get licenses and tax numbers for your nurse entrepreneur business
LeaRae Keyes, RN

Nurses starting business will usually need one or more licenses and a tax ID number before being able to start doing business. This even applies to nurse entrepreneur home based businesses. The first place to check on necessary licenses would be with the secretary of state for your state. In addition, you should also check with your local city/municipality and county to determine if you need any additional licenses with them. Some businesses will even need Federal licenses if your business is regulated by the Federal government.

You may also need to file your nurse entrepreneur business name or a DBA (Doing Business As) which is sometimes referred to as a fictitious business name or an assumed name. The best place to check for this is usually also with the secretary of state.

You will also need a Federal EIN (Employer Identification Number). You would get this number from the Internal Revenue Service. Additional business numbers you may need would include an unemployment number and a sales tax number depending on if you will have employees and if you will be selling products or services that are subject to tax.

Once you obtain these licenses, tax numbers, and open a business bank account you are generally ready to begin doing business. However, it is always advisable to check with an attorney and accountant to be sure that you have taken all the necessary steps to set up your nurse entrepreneur business.
