Year End Actions for the Nurse Entrepreneur
LeaRae Keyes, RN

In the last tip I wrote about a system for nurse entrepreneur business owners to collect money. This caused me to think about the year end review. I failed to mention in the last tip the importance of collecting any money owed you by year end. If you go past the end of the calendar year, which for most businesses is also their fiscal year end, the money owed to your nurse entrepreneur business becomes increasingly difficult to collect. This is because most companies want to get as much debt paid as possible before year end to reduce their tax burden. So be sure to take a look at any bills that are older than 30 days and take action to collect on these invoices before year end.

Unless you are in the retail business December may very well be a slow time of year for your nurse entrepreneur business. This is an excellent time to do a year end review and planning to keep you focused on your targets for the coming 12 months.

You should also develop your nurse entrepreneur marketing plan for the coming year. Determine what you will do to promote your nurse entrepreneur business and gain new customers while also keeping your existing customers. Take a look at the Marketing Plans on the Nurse Entrepreneur Network website to get new ideas for your marketing efforts for the coming year.

Review your goals and objectives from last year and set new goals and objectives for the coming year. Complete a written list of goals. It is not sufficient to simply have a mental list of goals and objectives.

Committing your goals to paper will make them more powerful and it will also be easier to take a look at each of the previous years to assess the progress your nurse entrepreneur business and you have made. Research has shown that when people take the time and effort to write out their goals and objectives they are much more successful than those who do not take this extra step. You may even find it beneficial to write out your goals for the next 3 - 5 years. You will see how the goals you set for the coming year can have an impact on your success well into the future.

Make a commitment to take these three steps before the end of the calendar year. Collect any outstanding money owed to your nurse entrepreneur business, write your marketing plan for the next 12 months, and write your goals and objectives for at least the next year and possibly for the next 3 - 5 years.
