Nurse Entrepreneur - Not Exactly
LeaRae Keyes, RN

While being in Mexico and learning Spanish I have begun to think more about volunteer nursing experiences and how they mimic nurse entrepreneur experiences. I became even more interested as I met and talked with a woman named Diane who attended the same language school my husband and I attended. She has a blog at www.bluedaisyiii.blogspot.com.

Diane travels around with her family often volunteering in exchange for room and board. She has found some very interesting volunteer experiences using the web site wwoof.com.

This got me thinking about volunteer nursing opportunities especially in the wake of the Haiti and Chile earthquakes. Volunteering in third world countries or in disaster areas can often provide a nurse with an experience of performing nursing very independently.

Having these volunteer experiences can help prepare a nurse for an entrepreneurial experience. Many of the skills developed while volunteering would be very beneficial when you start a business - measured risk taking, self reliance, creative problem solving, and many other skills.

I will be writing more about this in an article this week which I'll post on www.nurse-entrepreneur-network.com.
