How to Become a Self Employed Nurse
LeaRae Keyes, RN

Many nurses dream of getting out of the hospital, no longer working rotation shifts, weekends, or holidays. However, few nurses actually take the steps to make their dream of being a self employed nurse a reality.

You do not need to take the leap all at once. You can start by putting your toe in the water. You can begin very part time and gradually build up until you are able to be fully self employed.

The first thing you will need is an idea. What is it that you want to do as a self employed nurse? If you do not have any ideas search this website for ideas as to what other nurses have done to become self employed.

One you have the idea you need to determine if there is a market in your area for this type of product or service. Identify your target market (who is it that will buy this product or service). Meet with people in your target market to confirm that your idea is something they are seeking, can afford, and are willing to buy. Once you have confirmed that your product or service is viable in your area you are ready to begin the steps to actually start the business.

If you are seeking nurses who are doing what you intend to do you can read the discussion forum on this site and look for nurses who are doing the same or a similar thing to what you would like to do. You can also do a Google search on the title of the self employed nurse business you are interested in starting to see what Google finds. You can search social networking sites and connect with other self employed nurses.

Test often. Test out your idea before completely diving in. Create a small number of brochures and other collateral sales material. Use this material to begin selling to your target market. Do not be surprised if you come back and redesign your materials after having conversations with your target market. This is a good thing! It means you are listening and adapting to your market. This is a critically important part of being a self employed nurse. You can adapt to the market and make changes quicker than your larger competitors. Keep your investment in marketing materials low at the beginning of your self employment endeavor because these materials will almost certainly change.

Be prepared to learn. If you have never run a business before you will need to learn. It can be done. You will need to invest in education as you will likely need to learn about sales, marketing, operations, bookkeeping, collections, and more. It is possible. Just make a commitment to learn what you need to know before starting your self employed nurse business. It is a challenging, exciting, and rewarding process to build a business yourself!

Get a coach. It is important to have an objective outsider to help guide you. You can get lost and lose focus without getting input from one or more people on the outside of your business. Having a coach can help you avoid pitfalls experiences by other self employed nurses and keep you on the right track to a profitable business.
