Delegating Work to Nurse Entrepreneur Subcontractors
LeaRae Keyes, RN
I was recently asked by a Nurse Entrepreneur Network member "How do I use a
subcontractor?" There are many benefits and challenges to using a subcontractor.
Using a subcontractor can free you up to do some of the higher level work that
brings you the greatest profit.
Using a subcontractor is very similar to the process of delegating work. A
few of the critical steps are as follows:
- Know what you want. You need to have a clear idea of what it is that you
want before you can assign work to someone else.
- Express clearly what you want. Be as specific as possible as to the end
result you are seeking.
- Set critical dates and expectations. You do not want to assign a project and
then walk away from it. Nor do you want to micro manage a project. The way to
avoid both of these it to set up specific reporting times, what is to be
reported, and what your expectation would be at these intervals.
- Be available for questions. You do not want your subcontractor to wait until
the next reporting time to ask questions about a particular part of the project
they do not understand. Make yourself available to answer questions along the
way if they should occur.
- Keep a log of projects. If you are managing multiple projects keep a log as
to where you are with each project. This will make it visually obvious if there
are actions that are needed on a certain project.
Having systems makes tasks easier and simpler. Follow the steps above to
create your system for delegating your work to subcontractors and you will have
many fewer headaches.

Step-by-Step System for Article Writing".
